Hehe. I've been doing these pastels 1. a practice in color!!, 2. when i need to objectify my eye from looking at my comic pages, i switch to this, 3.i just love these guys.

i took pictures of my teachers in school so i probably will practice on their faces soon.

Actually, back to your point about looking at things more objectively, you can always take your picture and hold them to a mirror to see what looks funny., or flip it over a lightbox. something a lot of painters do if flip their canvases upside down to look at it and flip it back right side up to fix it.
